LumberKings Break In NelsonCorp Field With Another Comeback Win

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (2-3) trailed the Quincy Doggy Paddlers (3-2) 7-3 headed into the bottom of the fourth. The LumberKings put on a show , scoring 10 of the game's next 11 runs to win 13-9 and earn their first home win. 

 

The game totaled 31 hits, with every starter for both teams registering a hit. 

 

The LumberKings were led by Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western) with three RBI, Gavin Awbrey (SCC) with three hits and two RBI, and Brody Shinkle's (Creighton) two RBI.

 

Clinton got on the board five hits in the top of the first. Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) doubled to lead off the game. Drake Obermueller (DMACC), Awbrey, Danny Sanchez (Northern State) and Archer Ogbourne (Jacksonville) all picked up singles. 


Ziegler scored on an error and Awbrey drove in the game's second run. Grant Ingram (Bellarmine) made it 3-0 on a sacrifice fly in his first Clinton plate appearance.

 

Quincy scored four times in the second and three times in the fourth to build a 7-3 lead. 


The LumberKings began chipping away in the bottom of the fourth. Shinkle drove in a run with a single.

 

Awbrey and Sobiezczyk picked up hits in the fifth. Ogbourne registered a two-out RBI single to pull the team within one. 

 

Down one going into the sixth, Clinton pieced together a massive rally. Jackson Mishler (Black Hawk) led off with a single, Shinkle was hit by a pitch and Ziegler bunted over the runners. 

 

A wild pitch tied the game at 7. Awbrey came up with an RBI single to give the LumberKings the lead.

 

One pitch later, Sobieszczyk smashed a homerun to right field to make it 10-7. It was the first Clinton homerun of the season. 

 

The LumberKings tacked on three more an inning later Shinkle flew into a sacrifice fly, Ziegler drove an RBI double and an error made it 13-8. 

 

Connor Diilulio (SCC) earned the win with three shutout innings out of relief. He stranded four runners on base.

 

Gavin McCullough (McLellan CC) threw two innings of one run ball in the eighth and ninth to seal it.

 

Clinton finds itself in a four way tie for second place in the Northwest Division.
