LumberKings Fire On All Cylinders in Win Over Pistol Shrimp
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings (4-5) returned to NelsonCorp Field and played their most complete game of the season, downing the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (4-5) 8-1 June 4.
The LumberKings managed eight runs on 12 hits, while holding the Pistol Shrimp to eight hits and stranding eight. The reported attendance 4,930
Hunter Cook (DMACC) started the great pitching effort with four shutout innings. He struck out six while finishing his day with leaving runners on the corners.
Karson Grout (State College of Florida) clocked his first hit of the year on an RBI single in the fourth. He led the offense with two hits and three RBI.
Clinton kicked off the scoring with a pair of runs in the first. Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) doubled up the middle on the first Pistol Shrimp pitch of the game.
With two strikes and two outs, Isaac Sobieszczyk (Northwest Missouri State) doubled to right to make it 1-0. An Illinois Valley error allowed Sobieszczyk to score.
The LumberKings scored three times in the fourth, beginning on the Grout RBI single to score Grant Ingram (Bellarmine). After a Ben Toft (Iowa) single, another fielding error scored Grout.
Brody Shinkle (Creighton) picked up a sacrifice fly for his 10th RBI of the year a batter later and made it 5-0.
Clinton tallied two more in the fifth, starting on a Sobieszczyk double and a Cole Lanclos (Baylor) single. Sobieszczyk is up to four doubles on the year.
Grout's great game continued with a two RBI single to make it 7-0.
Illinois Valley and Clinton traded runs in the eighth. After a Ziegler leadoff walk, Gavin Awbrey (SCC) brought him home with an RBI single. It was his eighth RBI of the year.
Four Clinton relievers combined for five innings of one-run ball. Jackson Wohlers (Saint Leo) got the win with a shutout in the fifth inning.
Will Schufreider (Mount Mercy) followed with a scoreless inning. Brayden Billingsley (John Melvin) hurled two innings of one run ball in his first relief appearance.
Gavin McCullough (McLennan CC) tossed the ninth, hanging on for the Clinton win.
Ziegler registered three stolen bases during the game to get to nine on the season.
Illinois Valley travels to the Normal CornBelters (5-4) for another divisional contest.
