Elotes Survives Nailbiter with Cornbelters

Clinton, IA - The Clinton Elotes (24-13, 10-3) defeated the Normal Cornbelters (22-18,7-7) 6-5 in a nailbiter at NelsonCorp Field July 12.


Clinton ends the week atop the Northwest Division and has won seven-straight home games. 

 

The Elotes had a couple timely hits, starting in the bottom of the third trailing 2-0. 

 

Isaac Sobieszczyk (Missouri Western State) smashed a three-run bomb with two outs over the right field fence to make it 3-2. It was his second straight home game with a homer. 

 

After two scoreless innings, Normal planted one in the top of the sixth on a Ben Voegele double. He was thrown out at third to end the inning. 

 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Elotes regained the lead.

 

Noah Thein (Washington State) walked and JT Augustyniak (Kaskaskia) singled to put two on.

 

In his Clinton debut, Wrigley Matthys (Iowa) drove a ball out to left to make it 4-3. 

 

The Elotes scored two massive runs in the eighth inning. Jayden Bazile (Kaskaskia) started the frame with a one out single and Augustyniak reached on a fielder's choice.


With two on and two outs, Jaylen Ziegler (Iowa) drove a double into the left field gap to make it 6-3. 

 

Normal scored two in the ninth and loaded the bases. 


With the tying run on third, Andrew Theiss (SDSU) came up with a strikeout and fly out to end the game. He registered his fourth save of the season, which is tied for the league-lead. 

 

Six Elotes threw in the game, helping strand 14 Cornbelters in the game.

 

Laughton Joyce (Gateway CC) entered with the bases loaded in the third and got back to back strikeouts to end the top of the inning. 

 

Miller Tavaglione (Columbus State) got the win with three innings out of the bullpen. He surrendered one run.

Will Schufreider (Mount Mercy) threw the eighth inning without giving up a run. 

 

Clinton begins its "east-trip" on Wednesday, July 12. The team heads to the Chillicothe Paints  (19-19,7-4)for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch.
